Trait approach

This suggests that individuals have core personality characteristics, such as being shy when meeting new people. This is thought to continue in a sporting environment, so a shy person will still be shy on the sporting field. Some traits however such as being calm may help in certain sporting situations such as a penalty flick in hockey.

Despite these dominant trait characteristics, it must be remembered that our actual behaviour is affective by the environment and previous experience.
