Elite performance and the demands

Elite performers can be categorised into various levels. In order to undertake observations it is important to understand what constitutes elite performance in your specific sport.

Professional athletes

Professional performers are those who get paid an income for competing in sport. Incomes vary between sports, and also between performers in the same sport. This is influenced by the income generated through the sport and the success and profile of the performer. Examples include premiership footballers, formula one driver's and major county cricketers.

In order to complete at this level they will need to be very aware of their technical and tactical ability and a certain excellence is expected of them.

National representatives

National representatives are selected to represent their country in their sport. Sometimes this is dependant on availability for a particular event/competition, so standards can vary and it is not always a given that a performer will be repeatedly selected. Examples include David Beckham selected for England in the football World Cup and Jason Robinson representing England rugby in the Six Nations.

At this higher level, there is an exception from fellow performers and spectators that the athletes do have a high skill level and can read game effectively.
