Short Term Effects.[D]

The main way that sports psychologist develop motivation is through the use of goal setting. In reality, they are the dreams we have for ourselves but goal setting gives these dreams a realistic meaning and starts the process of moving us towards them. A goal usually represents a situation we want to be in, which involves us moving away from the situation we are currently in.

Why does goal setting work?

Goal setting works because it gives our wants and desires a specific outcome and gives us the steps we need to move towards this outcome. It gives our daily actions a meaning or framework to work within and gives us direction. Goals work to direct our energy and efforts.

Usually short-term goals are set to help achieve long term goals. It is important to set both short-term and long term goals, particularly short term goals because they will give a person more motivation to act now.
