Exercise adherence strategies and activty

When considering adherence factors, to ensure the athlete stays on track with their training regime, it is important to prepare strategies to aid the completion of the programme. This can be done independently or with the assistance of a coach, peer or family member. Here are some tips for one exercise adherence strategy which you could use:

Keeping a training diary or log

Any training sessions or reviews of progress should be kept in a training diary or log. This should include the date, time and a brief outline of the session so that a performer and coach can go back and look at the training session outlined.

This can be done in a variety of ways; either written or visually as session plans, or even an audio diary. With the increasing use of mobile devices performers could even use note sections on phone or apps on the iphone for example.

Training Log Activity

Imagine that you are a coach or an instructor working with various participants to increase their levels of physical activity. As a way to help them stay motivated, design a training diary so that the participants can track their training. An example training log can be found below. Once you have designed your diary, email it to your tutor.

  • Remember the items the participant will need to log - date, time, types of training.
  • How can you make the diary much interesting and fun?

Example Training Diary

Module 4 will look at training diaries in more detail.

Training logs and diaries help participants to:

  • Maintain focus - short, medium and long term goals.
  • Reflect on how much progress they have made - this will also increase motivation.
  • Encourages the participant to log rest to ensure that they include recovery time.
