Nutrition basics: Nutrients

For a diet to be healthy or balanced, it should include the following nutrients in certain quantities:

Macronutrients

  • Carbohydrate
  • Fat
  • Protein

Micronutrients

  • Vitamins
  • Minerals & Trace Elements

Others

  • Water
  • Fibre

The first three nutrients in the list (Fat, Protein and Carbohydrate) are known as macronutrients. Vitamins and minerals are known as micronutrients.
