Introduction

Participation in sport has increased drastically in recent years, and the desire to participate in sports activities shows healthy signs of continued growth. The Active People Survey 3 (from 15th October 2008 to mid October 2009) found that the number of adults in England who regularly take part in sport (at least 3 or more times a week) has reached 6.93 million, an increase of 80,000 from 2007. The survey identified the five most popular sports to be swimming, cycling, football, athletics and golf respectively. The monthly participation rates for other sports can be found by following this link.

A target set by Sport England aims to get one million people taking part in sport by 2012/13 and have stated that all National governing bodies are pivotal to this and have been set targets to increase participation rates in their sport. This target has been made easier to achieve as people become more aware of the health related benefits of taking part in sport, and with the legacy of the successful Olympic bid, more opportunities for those wanting to take part in sport will be provided.
