What to consider?

Hand notational analysis systems can be developed to become highly complex with a range of parameters included for analysis. However, they are just as effective when focusing upon a certain area of an athlete or teams performance. When developing a notational analysis tool the more detail that can be collected, the greater understanding of performance is provided.

The most effective notational analysis tools are developed to look at the sequence of events which lead up to an outcome or event. This allows the outcome to be analysed plus the tactics and techniques which are used in the build up the outcome/event. An example from Australian Rules football is shown in figure 1 below. The coach is looking to analyse the outcome of a teams shooting during a game, all the contributing factors are also analysed to give a clear and detailed account of what happened during the game.
