Fractures

A fracture is a complete or partial break of bone, commonly resulting from a direct impact such as an awkward or heavy fall, or badly timed tackle. Fractures require a considerable recovery time, from three to five weeks for a finger or toe, and up to 15 to 20 weeks for a femoral or tibial break. Fractures sustained by children tend to heal more quickly than those of adults, as the bones are still growing.

For competitive sports people, fractures can be career threatening. If a fracture is at all suspected, then the individual must be referred to the emergency services for an X-ray.

The signs and symptoms of a fracture are:

  • History of fall or other forceful impact
  • Swelling, bruising, and possibly bleeding
  • Local tenderness and pain
  • Increased pain on gentle compression of the bones
  • Restricted movements
  • Possible deformity
