Stress fractures

A stress fracture is a hairline crack in the bone. It is found commonly in runners however, stress fractures can also be a problem for throwers, footballers, ballet dancers, cricketers and other athletes'. Most major bones are potential victims of stress fractures, especially the femur, tibia, fibula, tarsals, metatarsals, pubis, and vertebrae, which are all weight-bearing bones.

Stress fractures are usually defined as being either the result of abnormal stresses (overuse) placed on a normal bone (fatigue stress fracture), or because of normal stresses placed on abnormal bone (insufficiency stress fracture).

A stress fracture, like the majority of overuse injuries, will typically reveal itself by a mild aching, accompanied by localized tenderness. As the injury develops, the aching worsens and the tenderness becomes distinct and strong.
