Shin splints

Stress fractures of the lower leg are sometimes diagnostically confused with shin splints (periostitis), as the two injuries share many similarities. Periostitis is simply an inflammation of the periosteum. The most common site for this problem is the tibia, which is commonly referred to as Shin Splints.

Overtraining is the main cause of this familiar problem. The typical symptoms are local pain and tenderness, and deep aching and stiffness following activity. Treatment usually requires relative rest, anti-inflammatory treatment, and massage therapy.
