Protecting and caring for the casualty and others

When approaching the scene of a sporting accident it is essential to protect yourself and others as well as the casualty.

1 - Assess the situation

Assess the physical environment and facility including other athletes, coaches and support staff surrounding the casualty. Make the area safe and prevent further injuries or accidents occurring.

2 - Call for assistance

Refer to qualified assistance in immediate range or call for emergency services. Never leave the casualty unattended.

3 - Provide reassurance and comfort whilst waiting for qualified help

It is important the casualty is calm and feels that the situation is under control. Introduce yourself and tell them what is happening and let them know if you are a first aider or if you have called for qualified assistance. Try to remain calm at all times when talking to them.
