Calling for qualified assistance

Every organisation or event will have a set policy and procedure for calling for internal assistance following an accident or injury. It is important for all officials and support staff to be aware of these procedures prior to or on arrival at the event.

Calling the emergency services

Dialling 999 within the UK activates the emergency services. The caller will be asked which service they require (police, ambulance or fire service). The following information must be provided:

  • The caller's name and telephone number
  • The location of the incident e.g. the name and address of the sports club and any important details about accessing the scene
  • The type of incident. It is important to say if the casualty is conscious and breathing as this will affect the response time
  • Details of any hazards such as chemicals involved.
