Types of casualty
Sports related injuries and illnesses can happen to anyone regardless of their age, health or sporting ability. Casualties are usually categorised according to their age:
Child - Someone under 18 years of age
Adult - Someone who is 18 or over
Both children and adults may also have a particular need with a specific requirement. This may be a medical condition such as diabetes or a learning difficulty. All coaches, officials and support staff should be aware of any particular needs of participants, as this information could help the emergency services diagnose and treat the individual in the event of an incident occurring.
It is important to note that children cannot be treated without first obtaining the consent of their parents or guardians. This is usually achieved by the person running the sessions or activities having a signed consent form from their parents or guardian giving this permission within their absence.
