Counselling

A sports performer is not exempt from the normal stresses and strains that everyday life throws up. As well as this, balancing g elite performance with a successful sports career can be very difficult. Many celebrities suffer breakdowns and emotional problems. This is also evident in professional sport at lower levels, not just the worlds best. Some performers have many stresses in their lives and this can, if not managed properly, lead to psychological problems and depression. Often this might be that performers do not understand that they are depressed and do not know what it is that is causing this. In these situations working with professional counsellors can assist in coming to terms with why the performer is unhappy and work with them to address this.

Sporting Chance, as mentioned previously, is a support service that was set up by Tony Adams, a former England football captain, who had a difficult time with alcohol addiction, as a way of providing elite sports performers a counselling service specifically tailored to help them. It is seen as the sporting equivalent of The Priory.
